What Is Bitcoin Dominance?
Bitcoin dominance measures Bitcoin’s market capitalization as a percentage of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization. A higher reading means Bitcoin accounts for a larger share of the market; a lower reading means more value is concentrated in altcoins relative to Bitcoin.
Why Can Bitcoin Dominance Rise?
Dominance can rise when Bitcoin outperforms altcoins, when capital rotates toward Bitcoin during risk-off periods, or when altcoin market capitalization falls faster than Bitcoin’s. The indicator describes relative market share; it does not by itself explain why prices moved.
Bitcoin Dominance vs Altcoins
Falling Bitcoin dominance often coincides with stronger relative performance across parts of the altcoin market, while rising dominance can indicate Bitcoin leadership. The relationship is not a guaranteed timing signal and should be read alongside market capitalization, liquidity and trend data.
Methodology & Source
TCP displays Bitcoin dominance from the Alternative.me global crypto market feed. Ethereum share is calculated by TCP as Ethereum market capitalization divided by total crypto market capitalization. “Other crypto” is calculated as 100% minus Bitcoin share minus Ethereum share. Historical dominance is not shown until TCP has a reliable free historical source.
